CHAPTER NINE

It’s dawn; the sky is barely turning blue when Lucky exits the shed to come face to face with Beth.

"Hello Lucas," Beth greets.

"its Lucky," Lucky closes the door and readjusts the lock so the McCoys wouldn’t get suspicious.

"What were you doing in there with Laura? You know solitary confinement usually means that you’re by yourself."
"I know perfectly well what it means. I just thought the punishment didn’t suit the crime so I went in there to keep her company," Lucky heads back for the house. "Do you always wake up this early?"

"I live on a farm. What do you expect? I’m the one surprised to see you up on your own. Being raised a city boy and all," Beth smiled. "Tell me were the kidnappers worse than the McCoys or what?"
"I wasn’t kidnapped for one thing. And Luke and Laura Spencer are the best parents anyone can have. In fact they are my parents not the McCoys."
"Then way come back Lucas if you felt that way? Why are you back here when you had the perfect parents back in New York?"

"They told me about Laura. I had almost forgotten those first five years and then the came to Port Charles and everything came back to me. I wasn’t going to back, but they showed me a picture of Laura after one of her beatings and I couldn’t stay away and let it continue. So I came back."

Beth looked at him and knew he had no intention of staying. She wondered what would happen to Laura once he was gone. "How about Laura? What will become of her when you go back to Port Charles since we both know you will."

"I’m taking her with me," Lucky looks Beth in the eye.

Beth doesn’t believe him. Lucas hardly knew Laura. Why would he all of a sudden leave a family he thought of as his to come back for a girl he didn’t even know?

"She reminds me of Lulu. My little sister back in Port Charles. Every time I think about them laying a hand on her I’d like to kill them, and them come here and see it up close…"

"Intense huh?" Beth asked, seeing the anger in Lucky’s blue eyes. Eyes that she could get lost in if she letted herself.

"Yeah. I haven’t been this angry since my girlfriend Elizabeth was raped in the park a year ago last February. When I found out who did it, I almost killed the bastard."

Beth’s gaze fell. She just knew he had to have a girlfriend. No one that handsome could be single. Oh well. Life went on. "She was raped?"

"On valentines day. This year we did something special together…sort of took the holiday back. Know what I mean?"

Beth nods knowingly as they walk back to the porch just as the McCoy’s come out the front door.

"Awake I see!" Paula crossed her arms.

"I was always a light sleeper," Lucky glowered at the woman.

"Well then do me a favor and get your sister. I think she’s learned her lesson," The woman snorts, moving back into the house.

"Don’t you think I need a key?"

"I did my research on the Spencers. So obviously you know how to open a lock without a key," Paula and Calvin disappear into the house.

Lucky shakes his head and goes to work repicking the lock to let Laura out.

"What other criminal acts do you know?" Beth asked.

"Hot-wiring a car, picking a pocket, losing someone that’s following you…that sort of thing," Lucky shrugged as if these things were every day knowledge. "Oh and how to hack into another computer. All taught by my dad. They were necessary if you wanted to stay ahead of the bad guys."

"So you were running from the McCoy’s!" Beth guesses.

"No not from the McCoy’s. From the mob. When Luke and Laura rescued me from this place, they were on the run from the mob. We traveled everywhere, from LA to Canada. Things were finally settled though and we settled down in Port Charles New York.” Lucky opens the door of the shed. Laura was peacefully sleeping in a corner, no sign of distress on her face.

"It’s a good thing you’re letting her out. Paula and Calvin would know something’s up since she’s not crying," Beth follows Lucky into the shed and watches as he lifts a sleeping Laura into his arms. As they step out into the daylight, Laura wakes up.

"Lucky?"

"It’s okay sweetie. I’ve got ya," Lucky smiled down at the girl. "It’s time to go back in that house."

"When will you take me to meet your mommy and daddy?" The girl asked.

"Soon Laura. I promise, as soon as I can we’ll leave for Port Charles," Lucky puts her down and takes her hand. All three of them head back to the house where Paula and Calvin were waiting.
