CHAPTER THREE
Lucky climbed up onto the boxcar he had called home during last
summer. Looking around at all of Elizabeth’s drawings, he sighs. It’s like
nothing had changed. He was still Lucky Spencer, son of Luke and Laura Spencer.
Oblivious of his past life as a McCoy. But he knew differently. Things were a
lot different and it was just the matter of what he was going to do about it. He
sinks down onto the crate in front of the drawing of the chair and stares off
into the horizon. He doesn’t even hear Elizabeth climb up until she’s all the
way into the boxcar.
"Lucky? Are you okay?" Elizabeth approaches him
carefully, not wanting to startle him. She grows more worried when he doesn’t
answer her. This wasn’t like Lucky. He’d usually open up with what’s bothering
him…not keeping everything in like this. "Lucky talk to me please. Tell me
what’s wrong…what can I do to help?"
Lucky sighs and lifts his hands to his face. "There’s nothing
you can do Elizabeth. You can’t make them go away and you can’t make Luke and
Laura my real parents, so there’s nothing you can do that’ll make a
difference."
"Lucky…of course Luke and Laura are your real parents. They
raised and loved you. They saved you from those people. They protected and
loved you with their whole hearts. That’s what being parents is all about. So
you see, they are your real parents."
"The law doesn’t see it that way Elizabeth. In the eyes of a
judge, the McCoys are my real parents and Luke and Laura are kidnappers. That’s
how they’re going to play it. They don’t care what kind of people the McCoy’s
are that eleven years ago when I was five they nearly beat me to death with a horsewhip!
All that’s circumstantial!"
Elizabeth kneels down next to Lucky and stares at the floor,
trying to rake her brain for something that’d change the situation, but Lucky
was right. There was nothing they could do. The McCoy’s were Lucky’s real
parents and if this went to court Luke and Laura will be put in jail and Lucky
would have to go back with the McCoy’s until he was eighteen years of age.
"I can’t let them go to jail for saving me Elizabeth. You
understand that don’t you?"Lucky looks Elizabeth in the eye.
Elizabeth shivers and nods. "Of course I do. They’re your
parents. They love you and no matter what had happened in the past year, you
love them too. Of course you don’t want them to go to jail," Elizabeth
squeezes his hand. She’s surprised when he pulls away from her.
"That’s why I have to do this," Lucky stands up and
jumps out of the boxcar. Elizabeth follows and watches as Lucky stands in the
middle of a train track.
"Lucky what are you doing?" Elizabeth stares at him, her
eyes wide with fear. "Get off there before a train comes."
"It’s better like this Elizabeth. Everything is so much
clearer right here," Lucky stares straight ahead as a train horn blares in
the distance.
"Lucky please, get off there! A train is
coming!"Elizabeth looks up the track as the ground begins to vibrate.
"This way there will be no Lucas for Laura and Luke to go to
jail over! It’ll be over!" Lucky doesn’t listen. He stands where he is
looking straight ahead as the train comes into sight. It’s now obvious what his
intentions were.
"Lucky get away from there!" Elizabeth shouted, fear
paralyzing her to that one spot. She couldn’t move a inch. All she can do is
stand there and yell and scream for Lucky to move.
"Lucky!!!!" Laura screams getting out of the car before
it skids to a stop. "Get off there right now!!!"
Lucky doesn’t listen. He stands there, facing the train head on as
it comes closer, it’s horn blaring.
"Lucky!" Luke and Nikolas join in with the pleas of
Laura and Elizabeth. They are also ignored. Nothing was going to make Lucky
move from the track.
Stefan Cassadine is driving to the docks and curses as he hears
the train horn. Another long wait for the passing train was going to make him
late for a dinner with Nikolas. This was just perfect. He finally got Nikolas’s
love back and now he was going to be late. He’s about to dial his cell phone to
call Wyndemere when he hears Laura and Elizabeth’s screams. He’s eyes widen as
she sees Lucky Spencer standing in front of a coming train, a look of
determination in his eyes.Luke and some other man was running to reach the boy,
but it was obvious they weren’t going to make it in time but Stefan would
judging from the distance.
Not even taking time to think about it, Stefan darts out of his
car and throws himself towards Lucky. He makes contact, knocking the boy out of
the way of the train just in time. Both Lucky and Stefan rolls in the wet
grass. Stefan covers Lucky with his own body as the train passes, making it
impossible for Lucky to move. Stefan automatically tightens his embrace around
the boy as he felt Lucky shake with sobs. What in the world could have happened
to make the boy so upset that he’d attempt suicide like this?
"Stefan thank God!" Laura cried running up to them just
as the train passes. "You saved my son!"
"I know how much he means to you and Nikolas," Stefan
sets up with Lucky, not letting go of the boy.
"Get off my son Vlad!!" Luke demands, pushing Stefan
away from Lucky and embracing Lucky himself.
"Just like you Spencer! I save your son’s life and you continue
to mock me!" Stefan stands up, wiping off his suit.
"Thank you Mr. Cassadine," Elizabeth sniffs, leaning
back into Nikolas’s arms, Nikolas just nods his thanks. "I don’t know what
happened. One minute we’re in the boxcar talking, and the next he’s on the
traintracks not listening to me to get off."
"Shhh Liz. It’s okay now. Lucky’s safe now," Nikolas
strokes her hair.
"I’m taking him home," Laura sighed. His old room is
waiting for him. Both Luke and Laura are relieved that Lucky doesn’t protest the
decision.
"Liz and I will go get some of his clothes and other
things," Nikolas nods.
"I’ll go with you," Earl volunteers.
"Nikolas…dinner…" Stefan begins.
"Have cook keep it warm for me. I may be late," Nikolas
leads Elizabeth to his jag, leaving Stefan staring after them, concern etched
in his face.
The McCoys are standing in the middle of Lucky’s apartment when
Earl, Nikolas and Elizabeth arrive to collect his things.
"What are you doing here?" Nikolas glares at the two
people that have caused all this duress for his family.
"Waiting for our son," Calvin puts down the strip of
pictures Lucky and Elizabeth had taken in New York only a week ago."Where
is he?"
"With his parents," Elizabeth answered pointedly, ignoring
the looks of warning from both Earl and Nikolas but she didn’t care. Lucky was
there for her through the whole Tom Baker thing. He stood up and protected her
and now it was her turn to do the same for him.
"You mean his kidnappers," Calvin glares at the girl,
not liking her one bit. He always believed that women were to be seen and not
heard and when they deviate from that, they had to be taught a lesson.
"Listen, we’re not here for a fight. We’re just here to get
some things and that’s it," Nikolas holds up his hands. "That’s
all."
"We’re not here for a fight either. We just want our son
back. That’s not hard is it?"
"Leave the boy alone Calvin," Earl stands in front of
the teens. "He doesn’t want even be in the same room with you."
"Yeah, after you turned him against us!" Paula
exclaimed.
"I say beating someone with a horsewhip would turn anyone
against their parents," Elizabeth glared at Calvin.
"This little girl has a mouth. I think it’s time someone shut
it," Calvin makes a move towards Elizabeth but Earl gets in his way.
"I don’t think so Calvin. I suggest you take your wife and leave. There’s
nothing here for you."
Calvin nods. "I will be back when my son returns,"
Calvin storms out along with his wife, leaving the trio alone in the apartment.
"Lucky will kill himself before going back with them,"
Elizabeth whispered sinking onto Lucky’s bed. "Tonight proves that."
"It’ll be okay Liz. I know it will. Just as soon as those
McCoys leave, Lucky will be back to normal."
"I hope you’re right Nikolas. I hope you’re right,"
Elizabeth sighed, resting her head against Nikolas’s shoulder.
