CHAPTER TWO

Luke and Earl find Lucky with Laura, Nikolas, Elizabeth and Lulu, all laughing and talking like there wasn’t a care in the world. How Luke wished that was so, but he knew it wasn’t. The McCoys were in town searching for what’s been lost to them for the past eleven years and Luke will be damned if he let them take his son.

"Hey gang. What’s going on here?" Luke approaches the table, Earl trailing behind him.

"Lucky was telling us about how you and Laura would break out dancing in the middle of the kitchen in Canada," Nikolas suppressed his laughter.

"Oh ha ha," Luke mockiedly laughed. "Thought that was funny did you Cowboy."

"Well at the time it was embarrassing, but now it was just plain funny," Lucky smiled, his eyes fall on Earl. "You again."

"Why Lucky don’t you remember Earl? Old family friend?" Luke asks. "You two were buddies back in the day."

Lucky frowned; searching his memory but comes up with nothing. "I’m sorry. I don’t remember."

"Oh that’s okay. You were only five at the time. I’ve only seen you in pictures since then," Earl forces a smile, trying not to show the hurt that Lucky had forgotten him. But it was all good. If forgetting him meant forgetting the abusive McCoy’s…so be it.

"Well that’s true. I can’t remember anything five years old and back," Lucky smiled.

"I can remember back when I was three," Nikolas grinned.

"Well you’re a Cassadine prince. It was your job to remember back when you weren’t even born," Lucky laughed.

"Shut up!" Nikolas laughs tossing a piece of bread at his brother. The rapport between the boys were so easy now. It’s like they’ve been together as brothers forever.

"Behave both of you," Elizabeth shakes her head. "You’re both acting like you’re Lulu’s age."

"How old are you little girl?" Earl bends down to the ebony haired beauty.

"Five."

"Same age as you brother when I knew him," Earl grinned. "She’s adorable Luke and Laura. You have beautiful children."

"We try our best," Laura nervously smiles, wondering what Earl Hatfield can want.

"I think we should tell Laura first, then talk to Lucky," Luke whispered to Earl.

"Good idea," Earl nods in agreement.

"Laura, can Earl and I talk to you inside please. It’s about something important."

"Can’t it wait until later?" Laura asked, not wanting to leave her sons.

"No darling. It really can’t," Luke shakes his head. "I promise, it won’t take long."

While Luke is in the diner with Laura and Earl, the McCoys approach Lucky’s table, knowing that they have found their son.

"Hello Lucas," Paula is the first to speak.

"Do I know you?" Lucky asked, having never seen the woman before.

"Of course you do. It’s been a long time though. Eleven years to be exact. Isn’t that right Calvin?"

"We’ve been searching all over for you," Calvin crosses his arms.

"What in the hell do you think you’re doing!" Luke storms out of Kelly’s seeing the McCoy’s approach Lucky.

"We were just telling Lucas…"

"Lucky why don’t you go in with your sister, Elizabeth and your brother here. Tammy’s offering free ice cream," Luke cuts Calvin off before he can get any further.

"Free ice cream," Lucky speaks to Lulu. "would you like that?"

Lulu nods readily. Smiling at the idea.

"Well come on. Let’s go get it," Lucky pick’s Lulu up and leads the others inside the diner.

"You had no right to do that!" Paula snarls.

"I have the right to do anything I want!" Luke glares at the couple. "Now tell me what do you think you’re doing talking to my son?!"

"Don’t you mean our son? And his name is not Lucky. It’s Lucas. Lucas McCoy," Calvin growls. "No matter what Hatfield may have told you."

"It wasn’t what he told us, it’s what we saw. The way you treated that boy was appalling and I’ll die first before I let you take my son!" Laura’s voice shakes with anger, her hands balled up in tight fists.

"He’s not your son. He’s ours. You should consider yourself thankful we don’t call the police and have you thrown into jail for kidnapping."

"Kidnapping! Ha! We’ll bring charges against you for abuse!" Luke laughs.

"And how would you do that? The only witnesses you have is Hatfield and Lucky. No one will believe Hatfield after our charges are filed and obviously Lucky doesn’t remember a thing," Paula laughed. "We’re being nice here. All we’re asking is for our son back. Then we’ll leave you and your nice little family here alone. You’ll never have to hear from us again."

"Listen here, and listen good," Laura gets up in Paula’s face. "You have no son. Your son died the night you let your husband whip him to death with that horse whip. In his place is a young man who’s been through more than most teenagers go through in a lifetime. He does not remember you nor should he want to. You were nothing but cruel and neglectful where we gave him constant love and kindness. And he knows how to spread that love and kindness to others. So I suggest you pack your things back up and leave Port Charles altogether."

"Fat chance. Enjoy our son Spencer while you can, because we’ll be taking him back to Kentucky with us and there’s nothing you can do about it! Come on Paula. We’ll talk to Lucky again when we have the chance," Calvin grabs his wife’s hand and pulls her away from Kelly’s.

"Luke what are we going to do?" Laura touches his shoulder. They gasp when they turn to see Lucky standing there, his face as white as a sheet. It’s obvious that he had heard the entire conversation. "Lucky?"

"Lucky dashes back inside. When Earl, Luke and Laura enter, they find Elizabeth and Nikolas hovering over Lucky, who had his head in his hands. Elizabeth is gentling stroking his head.

"What’s going on? Who are those people and why do they have my brother so upset?" Nikolas demands.

"Liz, what happened just now?" Laura asked.

"He just came in and said he remembered everything, then he just collapsed into the chair and began crying," Elizabeth explained. "He won’t say what it is bothering him."

"Oh Lucky…" Laura begans towards him, but Earl stops her. "I’ll go Mrs. Laura. Maybe he’ll talk to me.

Earl walks up and lays his hand on top of Lucky’s. "Lucas…it’s me big Earl. You remember me don’t ya. We were pals back then. I’d take care of you remember?"

Lucky raises his head and looks at Earl. He slowly nods.

"Good. Now you remember when you went away with Luke and Laura right? When we all agreed that they were your new parents?"

"Yes," Lucky swallowed. "I remember."

"Well that still holds true now than it did then. Luke and Laura are your parents. Not the McCoys."

"Who are the McCoys?" Liz asked confused. "And why do they have Lucky so upset?"’

"My biological parents," Lucky sighed. "My abusive biological parents."

Nikolas glances up at Laura, who’s holding back her coming tears. "What is he talking about?"

"The McCoys think Lucky’s their son and wants him back," Luke crosses his arms.

"They think? They know. I remember everything dad. All of it. I can’t believe it was so easy to forget. All the beatings…I can’t go back there! You can’t make me go back!" Lucky stands out of his chair.

"That’s exactly what we’re not going to do," Luke stands in front of the young man he’s called son for all these years. "No one is making you go back to that place."

"Besides, they can just come here and take Lucky can they? They gave up all parental rights," Nikolas doesn’t take his eyes away from his mother.

Laura bursts into renewed tears and Earl goes over to comfort her, knowing that he was the main reason for Laura’s distress. He had given her a son that he had no right to give and now the rightful parents were here, wanting their son back and it was breaking the woman’s heart.

"Well not exactly little prince," Luke sighs, turning to Nikolas. "You see, Laura and I were on the run, but we both wanted a child desperately…especially Laura. I didn’t know the reason at the time like I do now, she wanted someone to take care of and love unconditionally. I tried to discourage her, but she was unmovable. Well, we stop by to visit our old friend Big Earl here. It was obvious he was hiding something, but I just didn’t know what. We talked to him about our need for a child and his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. He brought us into his bedroom where a little boy, beaten black and blue was laying in bed staring at the ceiling. Big Earl asked us if we would take him. Laura of course said yes right away, a few seconds later I agreed. I fell in love with the boy myself, plus I too grew up in a abusive household. I couldn’t leave him there. Even with the mob after us…a life on the run was better than a life constantly beaten by the people who were supposed to take care of you. So we took Lucky and never looked back. We changed his name from Lucas McCoy to Lucas Lorenzo Spencer Jr. Lucky for short of course."
"So there was no legal adoption?" Nikolas asked.

Luke and Laura shook their heads no. Big Earl bowed his head. The McCoy’s threat to press kidnapping charges hung on his shoulders. Luke and Laura can be put away for a long time because of his brilliant ideas.

"Oh boy," Nikolas shook his head.

"I’m out of here," Lucky dashes out the door.

"Lucky wait!" Elizabeth called, running after him.

"Lucky!" Laura cried, running after the two teens, Luke , Nikolas, and Earl in close pursuit after Tammy agreed to watch Lulu.
