EPILOGUE

“Where do you want these boxes mother!” Portia called upstairs.  It’s been two days since the confrontation with Helena and Faith’s return.  Both women had decided to take Nikolas up on his offer to move into the cottage with him.  The two were settling in quite nicely.

“Just set the vase down on the table there,” Faith came down with Nikolas tagging along behind her.  She stopped and took a deep breath.  “Finally.  A normal life.”

Portia bowed her head, thinking that thanks to Helena, her life will never be normal and calm.  “Mother…I want to apologized for believing grandmother’s lies.”

“Oh sweetie, there’s nothing to be sorry for.  You had no idea that Helena was truly evil.  I just wished I was there to warn you.”

Nikolas cleared his throat, suddenly very curious.  “Portia…how do you feel about Luke and the Spencer family now?”

“I still hate them if that’s what you’re asking.”

        “Portia!” Faith scolded.

“Mother, I’m sorry.  But I can’t help it.  It was the way I was raised.”

“Portia,” Nikolas approached his cousin, understanding the feelings she was dealing with.  He had  once struggled with those same feelings himself.  “I know how you feel.  I really do.  My mother had left me for Luke Spencer and for awhile there, I hated them all too.”

“How did you get over it Nikolas?” Faith asked.  She had seen how close Nikolas was with his half brother.  It was very difficult to believe that they haven’t always been so close.

“We were forced to work together in order to help a mutual friend.  In doing so, we saw that neither of us were as bad as the other thought.  We became best friends and real brothers.  For the first time in my life, I feel loved and accepted for who I am.  I don’t have to be the prince for Lucky.  I don’t have to be the always-proper Cassadine.  I can just be Nikolas.  A normal guy living in a cottage.  What I’m trying to say here Portia is that I’ve worked pass my feelings of resentment towards the Spencers and so can you.”
        “But how?”
At that moment the doorbell rang.  Nikolas opened it to a beaming Lucky and Elizabeth.

“Are you two supposed to be getting ready for graduation?  Lucky you have that speech to write.”

“We just stopped by because we want you to be the first to know,” Lucky grinned, his eyes sparkling with happiness.

        “Know what?”
Elizabeth’s smile widened.  She held up a hand, which wore a small diamond ring.  “We’re getting married!”

        “What?  When?”
“We haven’t set a date yet.  But we know we can’t live without each other,” Lucky kissed his new fiancée tenderly before turning back to his brother.  So what do you say?  Be my best man?”
“You know I will,” Nikolas hugged his brother, happy that finally Lucky could be happy.  That the future that was almost lost was now newly found.
